Sunday 14th May – Walk ***** Martlesham to Gt. Bealings Church – sunny
periods.
Checked the wind early on laptop as it was supposed to be breezy first
thing but it was not and then it started raining so stayed in bed! Then
after breakfast I had a drive to The Dip but no good, I couldn’t waste
any more time waiting for the wind to blow so I packed a sandwich and with
the sun coming out we drove over to Martlesham Red Lion to walk along the
tiny River Finn.
Set off at 11.50 and soon found the footpath past the small cottages to the
River Finn. The last time we were there you could get close to the water to
see loads of woven barriers recently placed in the river to make habitat
for fish but sadly the river was overgrown with nettles so we got only odd
glimpses of the water!
We passed under the railway bridge, then up to the tunnel under the busy
and noisy A14 before turning left along the river. You can’t believe you
are so close to Woodbridge and Ipswich as you walk through beautiful
Suffolk countryside which is surprisingly hilly with meadows of wild
flowers plus crops of barley, potatoes and wheat.
We were not sure where we were going but spoke to a nice young family
kingfisher spotting by the river who pointed out a circular route. The path
continued through the crops to a lane where we spotted a church in the
distance. We followed the quiet lane finally reaching the rather impressive
Gt Bealings Church. There was a nice picnic bench there but it was
surrounded by bees so soon found a wooden seat a little way on for our
delicious edam and marmite sandwich, the sun was now fully out and the
sweatshirt had to come off.
Refreshed we retraced our steps back to the village, finding an old style
red phone box which had been turned into the village library, what a great
idea but I can’t see that working in Felixstowe as some oaf would
vandalise it:( We spoke to a nice man in the old Post Office Cottage who
was an expert on local history before finding the footpath again.
When we got back to the A12 tunnel instead of going the safer way under the
railway we followed to footpath signs which for some strange reason take
you to some steeps where you have to cross the railway lines! It was then a
mile back to the van past the river where Mag thinks she spotted a
kingfisher whizzing past.
It appeared that the wind had picked up so on returning to Felixstowe I
checked the sea but although it might have been just windy enough to sail
it was well offshore so fingers crossed that the forecast southerly arrive
tomorrow but we are used to disappointment here in Felixstowe so I am not
holding my breath!
